No recuerdo...

¿O no?

Frivolous or Spanish
kisses?

They say that when Spanish women kiss, they kiss seriously, and they’re not interested in kissing frivolously. Well, I'm not a Spanish woman and through the years, I've kissed a few Spanish men– and other nationalities, for that matter– out of frivolousness. It hasn’t seemed so bad. The fact is that it is increasingly difficult for these kisses to reach my heart and it is especially confusing to me that the unwary recipients and senders of these kisses perceive them as "passionate". Could it be then that I have never given a real kiss, and therefore they continue to "feel" the same when emotionally they feel so empty? I enjoy them physically, but it’s just not the same. Could it be that all kisses are the same? Do real, butterfly-inducing, earth-shaking, passionate kisses, exist?!

That Friday night, I was not eager to leave the house. I had been invited to a party where I met the host only for a few days before and knew no one else. I even left "by mistake" my purse at home and I had to return for it before heading to the gathering (it's funny how over the years, birthday parties are replaced by club parties and club parties by more grown-up parties). Anyway, what happened is that my girlfriends had bailed on me –or had I not wanted to invite them?– I don’t remember... So, as always, I arrived after midnight, what had become a tradition among my friends and I, followers of GFN (Girls Friday Nights); ringing the doorbell, I entered the apartment and greeted everyone in a very natural way, very adult!, I thought later.

Immediately a face captured my attention. I sat in the dining room table were two Nigerians, one Russian and four Mexicans were drinking (sounds like a joke, right?). I was immediately offered a glass of red wine and easily joined the conversation. Two of the Mexicans were musicians, pianist and singer, a match made in Bach and rock and roll heavens, and to get it step with them I told them the story of how, in a twist of fate, I had taken classes with an incredible vocal teacher last year. The "boy of the captivating face" entered the conversation… I was too tired to “play sexy" so I continued talking normally. As the night wore on, the dynamics became bizarre when we all began to dance early 90’s dance music in the living room.

In an attempt to fix a speaker on the wall, the "boy of the captivating face” had his back turned to me. Suddenly, he turned around and kissed me! Wow! His lips tightened so well!, Strong but gentle ... so confident! The rest of the evening I searched for his lips, I wanted to feel the joy and surprise all over again, more and more. Finally, the only remaining partyers were the host (who was also roommate of “the boy of the captivating face”) with a girl, and he and I. Then, sitting on the couch we began a kiss that seemed lasted over half an hour. Amazing! In a stage in my life when I thought there were not many "first times" left for me, there I was, in the south of the city, kissing a stranger eight years older than me, feeling like never before in my life ... the more perfect first kiss I'd had. The story continues in his bedroom but does not turn out as well. My compulsion to clarify everything from the "beginning" frustrated the first and possibility of future encounters. I left in a hurry a few hours later and could only give him a pat on the arm and say, "Nice to meet you, goodbye."
Obviously it wasn´t a kiss of love, what it usually meant by a “real” kiss, but at least I realized there is a third category, which is kissing when you really enjoy it. Those kisses which you really want to give even when there isn´t a feeling that intensified them yet. But Hey! How else can a true love story start without a story of intense passion? Right? So I'll keep kissing, not frivolously, not "truly", but in a "captivating" way that I really enjoy and that keeps my attention, until the possibility of the kiss of "true love" arrives.
